My TNIV and A Commentary on 1 Peter: What do they have In Common?

Anyone who reads this blog knows that the TNIV is my translation of choice.  Despite its shortcomings and approach to the gender-issue that some are uncomfortable with, I still think it’s the translation to use. :-)

Last year I taught 1 Peter at my congregation, and a few years before that, I did my master’s thesis on 1 Peter 3:18-19, from a Greek perspective.  And the only commentary I have written by a woman is on 1 Peter.

Here’s the grind: One of the translators of the TNIV was Dr. Karen H. Jobes, associate professor of New Testament at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA.  And Dr. Jobes is that woman that I have in mind.  She wrote the 1 Peter commentary in the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament.  Her discussion on the very controversial text of 1 Peter 3:18-22 is worth the price of the commentary.

When I saw Dr. Jobes as one of the translators of the TNIV, I smiled.

  1. I’ve got to break down and get Jobes’ 1 Peter, if only show my support for female scholarship. The fact that Don Carson considers it the best all-rounder commentary doesn’t hurt either!

I think we may be another presidential election away before I’ll actually need it for Sunday School, though. Maybe close to two elections!

Jobes’ commentary is in my Amazon.com wishlist at http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/3IXZ5WK1IR6ES.

Oh, I forgot to mention my growing appreciation for the TNIV. The more I read it the more I like it.

Chuck, I think it’s wonderful what Dr. Jobes has been doing. I don’t mind supporting female scholarship.

Stan, I’m glad that you’re coming around to the TNIV. It’s a fine translation.

El, the HCSB is always after alliterations. :-)

Like Stan, this is also on my personal wishlist. Karen Jobes is one of the best on 1 Peter.

Karen Jobes on 1 Peter is masterful.
