Poll: In Studying the Historical Jesus…

I think it’s great that so many of you are so well read. Your place in the body of Christ is critical. I had to vote other because you didn’t put Matthew, Mark, Luke and John down as a choice.
Duane,
Fair enough. But the strained created by NT scholars between Jesus of Nazareth and the Christ of faith is a worthwhile investigation, at least for me.
But I could dismiss this dichotomy a priori.
You are a little more posteriori than me, I prefer to lie on my couch and know it’s true.
I should like that that some day.
I voted LTJ, but the other would be Keener.
Brian,
I thought about Keener and a few others but wanted to limit to 6 and the 7th being “other.”
I’m taking a seminar with LTJ this semester on NT theology. I doubt he would teach a course on the historical Jesus, though.
That’s awesome.
I doubt he would NOT mention the historical Jesus, esp. his literary approach to the matter.
Luke T. Johnson is not supportive of Historical Jesus research, and Larry Hurtado, technically, is no Historical Jesus scholar. Besides NT Wright, who wrote one of the best treatments on the Historical Jesus–one in which he thinks creatively about how Jesus viewed himself and his role vis-a-vis YHWH and which few have sought to engage seriously–Sean Freyne would be someone I’d like to learn from. He attempts to situate Jesus in his Palestinian Jewish context and show how this influenced him theologically.
Scott,
LTJ’s objection, of course which he is entitled to, is regarding methodology (I do agree with you Hurtado objection).
Well, I believe everyone engaging at this critical level seeks to put Jesus back in his Jewish context. So far, methodology seems to be major point of difference.
Darrell L. Bock, of course.
Martin.
Martin,
I can see that for the more evangelically-minded.
N T Wright. I really am a fan TC
Metts,
Have you had a change of heart?
I think so. How far I’m willing to go with justification is another matter. But I will certainly go where the evidence points.
Metts,
At first, I too resisted Wright until I read and reread him.
At least you’re giving him serious considering.
TC
I vote for Jesus. He seems to be the most accurate on knowing history and “his story.”
After all, all “history” revolves around Jesus and “His story.”
The virgin birth, the life, and crucifixion of Jesus.
It’s now 2009. If we go back a few years. 500, 1000, 2009, we wind up a zero.
What do we find at zero?
When we go past zero we have 500 B.C. 1000 B.C. 2000 B.C.
And B.C. stands for “Before Christ.” All of “History” points to Jesus and His story.”
Before Jesus and after Jesus.
I usually tell that story to an atheist after asking them if they ever sign a check and date it.
Then I thank them for honoring my Lord and savior Jesus when they date the check.
It is the year of our Lord, 2009. Thank you Jesus
TC
Still voting for Jesus. He will teach us all truth.
John 6:45
It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God.

Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice,
that he might instruct thee:

1 John 2:20
Ye have an *unction from the Holy One, and ye *know all things.
*unction = anointing *know = perceive, discern, discover.
A.Amos,
I respect your vote, but we’re approaching Jesus, not through himself, but another.
I could not decide between Wright and Dunn, so I voted for Wright because of his alluring accent.
Diglot,
Both are good, but I’m so familiar with Wright that I’ve extended myself to Dunn these days.
Hurtado and Wright would be my choice combo.
Not a bad combo.
Someone actually voted for John Dominic Crossan. Why I ask?
