Wow! This piece actually made my day. My hat off to Fox New’s Brit Hume and this, well, fitting advice, especially in the Public Square:
- HT: JT
And from Hume’s Radio address:
“Christianity is uniquely and especially about redemption and forgiveness. That is what the cornerstone of what the faith is about. Now other faiths aren’t hostile to the idea, but think of what the message of Christ and Christianity is. It is that the God of the universe sent His only begotten Son, who died a hideous death on the cross, to atone for all of our sins. And we are thereby offered through that act a new covenant in which we are offered forgiveness and redemption on a continuing basis in return for our faith in God and our continuing efforts to live the Christian life. That is a unique doctrine.” (HT: Denny Burke)
And in the face of competing religions, I submit the following from the inimitable G.K. Chesterton: “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried.”

I saw Hume’s comments when they first aired. I almost fell out of my chair! I kept waiting for someone to pounce.
People have pounced, especially the ‘tolerance’ crowd and even Christians.
Jeff
Stan,
According to Jeff, some people have already pounced on Hume’s statements. But why should Christians objective? I don’t get it. I just edited in a quote from his radio address on the matter.
Jeff,
Thanks for the info.
My take on why Christians object is that they think Christianity can be compartmentalized to pull out in the right places and for the right situations. Obviously the news is not the place (or they’d be cheering instead of making snide comments).
Bitsy,
What about when Christianity is maligned and so on in the news? I don’t follow their objection then.
Wow. Good stuff. My prayer for Tiger exactly. And his family as well.
Alisa,
Can’t go wrong.
Absolutely fabulous! Gooooo Bret!
Stan probably meant waiting for someone to pounce during the broadcast.
This broadcast was earlier last week ? and people have been all over Brit Hume. He knew it would happen of course.
Jeff
Yes. During the broadcast.
Stan,
Don’t you know that in blogosphere you’ve got to say exactly what you mean?
I guess an exchange would have been good for those of us who like that sort of thing.
Good stuff. I heard about this the other day. For my part, I applaud him.
Justin,
Given the platform.
While I certainly applaud what he said and hope I would have the same courage to do so, I can understand why secularists do not like it. What he did was not good from a journalism perspective, albeit great from a Christian perspective. I am glad he made the choice he did.
I’d don’t know why secularist are surprised though, its not like there is ever any real journalism on Fox anyway.
He was a guest on a show, not a journalist.

Daniel,
The secularists are being exactly who they are secularists.
What about Christian journalism?
Well, the clip is from O’ Reilly. Ha!

While I can support what Hume said, I just hope his life matches his talk – it doesn’t help any when guys like Hume have had affiars and then go off in public talking about Christianity – though nobody is perfect and we all make “mistakes” unless your life matches your talk, it’s better to keep quiet. At least, that is how I see it.
Why would you assume otherwise?
Brian,
In this case, if Hume’s affairs are in the distant past and he has consistently displayed a changed life and one of fidelity, then he have have earned that right. But again…
Brits advice was pretty naive and stupid.
First of all you don’t solve your marital problems by turning to Christianity.
1/3 of evangelical Christians are divorced.
Christians are no better than non Christians…just going to church every Sunday and witnessing for Christ doesn’t make you a good person or a follower of Christ.
Christ taught love, forgiveness, kindness, helping the poor. He opposed fighting and war. He objected to people who spent time gathering goods and money.
Frankly, I don’t see many Christians living Christlike lives today…especially among the strongest proponents…politically conservative folks.
They hate immigrants, blacks, foreigners (they come over and demand special privileges). They have no love for the poor or the needy (a bunch of welfare cheats) . And they aren’t for Peace (Invading Iraq was a good thing).
Norris,
I understand your straight to the point objections. They are worthwhile. But get this: Are we talking a particular brand of Christianity, or Christianity as it is truly understood, surrending to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and so on?
Forget about American Christianity at this point. If American Christianity is what Hume has in mind, then you’re correct to a degree. But I hope Hume had the pure fountainhead in mind.
MediaCurves.com conducted a study among 604 viewers of a news clip in which Brit Hume states that only the Christian faith, not Tiger Wood’s current Buddhist faith, can offer forgiveness for his alleged affairs. Results showed that the majority of respondents (74%) indicated that Brit Hume’s on-air comments were ‘not at all effective’ at convincing Tiger Woods to switch his faith to Christianity. More in depth results can be seen at:

Thanks,

which I think might be entirely beside the point.
Sorry my replies are so late. I just got these in my feed reader. Every once in a while they come in days late.
